The Spanish Agricultural Insurance System was founded in 1978 to provide a technical and financially viable cover that would allow the agricultural sector to cope with the severe damage caused to production by uncontrollable and unpredictable risks that have catastrophic consequences and to provide the State with an effective instrument to implement a rational policy for the sector.
Agricultural insurance in Spain is based on joint participation between public and private institutions.
Agroseguro is responsible for the management of agricultural insurance in the name and on behalf of insurance companies that are part of the co-insurance pool. It is not, therefore, an insurance company, but a management entity.
