Green ecosystems are pivotal for anthropic pollution mitigation. Due to the constant increase of atmospheric pollution, green ecosystems mitigation ability is highly important for preserving the environment and human health. Plants contribute to pollutant mitigation though different ecosystem services such as CO2 abatement and gaseous pollutants and PM sequestration. Plants are natural remediation systems providing social and sanitary benefits for the urban population, and are thus easily accepted by the citizens. To achieve a proper mitigation, a correct planning of green areas is however necessary; plant species need to be chosen considering the surrounding environment, microclimate and the species agronomical and physiological characteristics, services and possible disservices. IBIMET Bologna described and selected the trees, shrubs and grasses more apt to absorb atmospheric CO2, capture PM and adsorb ozone and other gaseous pollutants through micromorphological and physiological analyses, and the application of flexible models.

The project aims are:

- the assessment of the environmental impact of urban vegetation using biometric techniques and models for environmental mitigation determination;

- the use of low-cost monitoring stations for a detailed pollutant mapping inside and outside green areas to verify air quality improvement;

- the involvement of citizens and stakeholders in air pollution monitoring (monitoring station “adoption”); the use of easy-to-understand information systems on air quality improvement (led lights changing color according to pollutant concentration); the development of a smartphone app for identifying plant species and their mitigation ability
