SUSHIN is an Italian project exploring novel ingredients and underexploited feed resources as valuable substitutes or supplements of conventional feed ingredients for the formulation of efficient, cost-effective and sustainable diets for rainbow trout, sea bass and sea bream. Feeding tests will be carried out in pilot experiments and on commercial farms.

The project goal is to provide new ingredients with a low ecological footprint and new sustainable feed formulation to improve the biological performances of the three most important Mediterranean farmed  fish, to increase economic efficiency and environmental sustainability of aquaculture companies.

TOTAL BUDGET: 716.000 €

MAIN OBJECTIVES

  • Assess nutritive value of new ingredients and underexploited feed resources
  • Formulate new fish diets based on novel ingredients
  • Assess fish performance, health and welfare in response to the new formulated diets
  • Assess quality and safety  of commercial fish fed with the new diets
  • Evaluate environmental and economic performance of the formulated feeds
  • Investigate perception and  consensus of consumers towards innovative products

  • Database on feeds ingredients  and innovative feed formulation
  • New insights into biological response of farmed fish to the newly formulated diets
  • Protocols for food safety and quality control of  the new ingredients and formulated feeds
  • LCA analysis and bioeconomic models for feed production
  • Communication, dissemination and training of technicians and researchers
