Laboratory missions

The GET is a basic and applied research laboratory of more than 165 permanent staff (about 250 people with students, post-docs, fixed-term staff, etc.). Our areas of expertise are those of geosciences and environmental sciences built around researchers of 5 different statuses:

• CNRS researchers,

• IRD researchers,

• professor-researchers of Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III),

• Observatory physicists (CNAP ),

• CNES researchers *.

This multi-membership makes it an ideal cocktail to sweep the whole spectrum of our disciplines with access to rare sites, to a large number of data, means of observation and experimentation of quality and multiple. In addition to the mission of research sensu stricto CNRS researchers, support to developing countries or emerging countries of the South for IRD researchers, initial and continuing training for teachers-researchers, observation and service tasks for observatory physicists and CNES staff, it is the complementarity of these different statutes that has allowed the development of the 9 research teams that are carried out in this laboratory. These research themes are also based on our analytical testing and measurement facilities, our international joint laboratories, our excellence in geology, geochemistry, isotopy, metallogeny, petrology, mineralogy, etc. The size of the laboratory is a strength and a weight on the national and international level, which allows it to be in the large groups of reflections that build national and international calls for projects. It is the same locally where the RTRA, COMUE de Toulouse Midi-Pyrenees, University Paul Sabatier, will change the classical contours of research and laboratories. We have already begun this strategic positioning thanks to the excellence of our research and our researchers, but we must continue in this direction: to strengthen our position and our representation, particularly at the international level, in major programs and research policy institutions (in particular at the European level). The young population of the laboratory requires a significant investment to achieve these strategic objectives. This is perfectly well underway with teaching both locally and nationally (participation in setting up ENAG in Orléans, the Erasmus Mondus Clays Master in Poitiers). We support as a priority our teaching courses, which fill up and place their students. A very important mission for the GET is the training of ITA and IATOS staff, without neglecting those of researchers and teacher-researchers. These courses are necessary to maintain leadership in certain areas, but above all they allow our technicians to progress very significantly in their careers.
